Music Ministries

A team of talented and dedicated musicians provide the musical leadership at each of our weekend Masses. They support and enhance the communal sung prayer by the addition of some vocal harmonies as well as special instrumentation. Each music group rehearses approximately 75 minutes prior to their weekend liturgy, with combined and special group rehearsals scheduled seasonally and as needed. This ministry depends on the active support of many gifted volunteer musicians who help support the Center’s vision for creating “vibrant liturgy”.

  • Pianists & Other Instrumentalists

Instrumentalists support and enhance our communal sung prayer and praise!

Essential to each of our music groups are a number of talented instrumentalists who graciously share their gifts with our community. These include but are not limited to: pianists, guitarists, flutists and other woodwind players, trumpeters and other brass players, cello, violin and other string players, and percussionists. Instrumentalists should have prior training and an accurate sense of rhythm. We are always seeking new recruits to join our dynamic ministry. If you are gifted with instrumental ability, we welcome you to contact us for an informal audition, to assess your skills and discuss this ministry in further detail.

  • Youth Singers

We encourage all children in grades two and higher who would like to participate in the Music Ministry at the monthly Youth Liturgical to join our Youth Singers. There are special rehearsals for the Youth Singers – usually the week in advance of a Youth Liturgical Ministry Sunday. These youth receive their own hymnal to use for practice at home, as well as links to recordings of the songs and responses used at Mass. While they most often sing with the adult music ministry, our Youth Singers may also learn some special songs throughout the year to sing as a choir.

These younger members of our community enjoy learning about the various parts of the Mass and why we sing the songs and acclamations that we use. They also appreciate learning about the differences in liturgical seasons.

  • Seasonal - Concerts and Holy Week

    Advent-Christmas Choral Concert

Each December the Paulist Center holds a choral event to highlight the Advent-Christmas season. We encourage participation in this annual event by singers and instrumentalists from within our regular music ministry as well as others who enjoy singing the songs of the season. Apart from the ability to sing in tune, there is no special audition for this event.

The concerts usually occur on the second Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon of December. Featuring a variety of traditional and contemporary carols of the season, the concerts serve as an annual fund-raiser for the Center. Those who participate as well as those who attend also experience a great way to build community.

We hold rehearsals on Thursdays from 6:45 – 9pm in the chapel, early October to early December.

    Triduum Music Rehearsals

Each Holy Week, we celebrate many special liturgies with festive songs, unique rituals and prayerful solemnity. To prepare for the days of Holy Triduum, we hold special music rehearsals on the Thursday evenings of Lent. During this season, the music ministers from all weekend groups are encouraged to come together and work in unity to enhance these celebrations with songs that support the special rhythms and mood of each day. By collaborating during this season, we are also able to embellish many of the pieces with special harmonies and solo instrument parts. While some music remains constant, we also bring in some new repertoire each year to add variety and interest for all.

  • Music Ministry Advisory Group

A representative group of music ministers serves, at the invitation of the Pastoral Minister of Music, as an advisory body for music selection and programmatic policy for the Center. The membership on this group includes representation from each of the weekend Mass groups, as well as a cross section of cantors, singers, pianists and other instrumentalists.
